Character.AI Bankruptcy: What Happens to Your Chats?

By myaicompanion Editorial · Updated 2026-10-22

Hourglass filled with glowing chat bubbles running out, city lights behind

The Character.AI bankruptcy is real, and your chats are still there today, but nobody can promise they will be there in December.

I read the company's statement and the court reporting line by line, because I would want to know exactly where my own characters stand.

Below is everything the company and the press have actually confirmed, what is still unknown, and the three things I would do right now if my own characters were on the line.

Quick answer. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 to sell the company under court supervision. The app still works, subscriptions still bill, and you can request a data export today. If no buyer keeps the platform running by late November or early December 2026, the company says it will be wound down. Export your data now: request it from the Character.AI app or website today, while the service is still running.

What actually happened

On October 12, 2026, Character.AI published an official update saying it had started a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy process.

The goal is a court-supervised sale of the company.

The company blamed "mounting legal, regulatory and operational challenges," according to Tom's Guide reporting syndicated on Yahoo Tech.

Under Chapter 11, the company keeps operating while a court oversees how it is restructured or sold.

Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not today, and maybe not at all.

Character.AI says the platform "remains up and running" and that you can keep using all services for now.

The catch is in one sentence of the official update.

If the sale does not produce a bid that keeps the platform operating, "the platform will be wound down."

The company expects the sale to be finished by the end of November or early December 2026.

The real deadline for Character.AI users is roughly five to six weeks from the filing, not some distant date.

Is Disney buying Character.AI?

Disney is the reported initial bidder, according to Tom's Guide.

Its offer is $20 million for a non-exclusive, perpetual license to certain Character.AI intellectual property.

A license to use the technology says nothing about running the app, keeping the community or keeping your chats.

The same reporting notes that Disney has hired former Character.AI staff, including former CEO Karandeep Anand, who is now Disney's chief technology officer.

Other companies can still submit competing offers during the court process.

I break down exactly what Disney is paying for, and what it leaves behind, in Disney and Character.AI: what the $20M deal buys.

What happens to your chats and characters

Here is what is confirmed and what is not.

Question Status (as of Oct 22, 2026)
Can I still log in and chat? Yes, the service is running
Are my chats deleted? No, nothing has been announced
Did privacy practices change? No, the company says they are unchanged
Can I export my data? Yes, via the app or the website
Will a buyer keep my chats? Unknown
Will my characters survive a shutdown? Unknown, assume no

The company has not said whether a buyer would keep existing conversations or user-created characters.

Tom's Guide puts it bluntly: users "shouldn't assume their conversations will remain accessible" if the service shuts down.

Keep your expectations realistic about the export, too.

It gives you a record of your data, but it will not bring your character back to life on its own.

It will not recreate how the bot talked, because every app runs a different model.

Whether a buyer could end up with your chats is a separate question, and the answer depends on the court; I explain it in can Character.AI sell your chats?

What about your subscription?

Paid subscriptions remain active, and billing is unchanged for now.

That means you keep getting charged unless you cancel.

Character.AI says it intends to notify subscribers in advance if changes affect paid features.

If you mostly pay for perks you might lose in a wind-down, it is reasonable to cancel and stay on the free tier until the sale is decided.

What to do today: my 3-step plan

1. Request your data export now

Exports can take time to arrive, and demand will spike as the deadline gets closer.

The company confirms you can request one through the Character.AI app or website.

I am recording a screen-by-screen walkthrough and will link it here as soon as it is live.

2. Save your favourite characters by hand

The export protects your data, but your best characters live in their definitions.

Open each character you care about and copy its name, description, personality, greeting and any example dialogue into a document.

That text is what you will paste into a new app to rebuild the character.

My guide to writing an AI character that works in any app has a template for it.

3. Try a backup app before you need one

Do not wait for a shutdown email to start testing alternatives.

Pick one or two apps now, rebuild your favourite character there, and see if the experience works for you.

I am testing the main options with the same script on every app, and I will publish the results in my Character.AI alternatives guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Character.AI shutting down?

It has not shut down yet: the platform is running during a court-supervised sale, and the company says it will be wound down only if no bid lets it keep operating.

The sale is expected to finish by late November or early December 2026.

Will my Character.AI chats be deleted?

Nothing has been deleted so far, and the company says its privacy and security practices are unchanged.

It has not said what a buyer would do with existing chats, so the safest move is to request a data export now.

Is Disney buying Character.AI?

Disney is the reported initial bidder, offering $20 million for a non-exclusive, perpetual license to certain Character.AI intellectual property.

A license does not commit Disney to running the app, and other bidders can still make offers.

Should I cancel my Character.AI subscription?

Subscriptions stay active and billing continues unless you cancel.

If you mainly pay for access you could lose, consider cancelling and keeping the free tier until the sale is decided.

Can I move my characters to another app?

You can copy a character's definition into most other companion apps.

The result will feel different, because every app runs a different model, but your character's personality and story come with you.

The bottom line

The Character.AI bankruptcy does not mean your chats vanish tomorrow, but the clock is running until late November or early December 2026.

Export your data, save your characters by hand, and test a backup app while you still have time.

I will update this page as the sale moves forward.
